Vision Detection Systems
GLOSSARY

Security terms.
Defined.

Definitions for the acronyms, standards, and technologies used across mobile surveillance, video analytics, and physical security.

A

Access Control System

ACS

Electronic system that manages entry and exit to secured areas using credentials such as key cards, PINs, or biometrics. VDS integrates with leading ACS platforms for unified security management.

Artificial Intelligence Analytics

AI Analytics

Cloud-processed video analysis using machine learning models to detect objects, people, vehicles, and events in real time. VDS AI VisionStream filters 98% of false positives before alerts reach operators.

C

Closed-Circuit Television

CCTV

A video surveillance system that transmits signals to a limited set of monitors or recorders. Modern systems like VDS use IP-based cameras with cloud connectivity rather than traditional analog CCTV.

Cloud Video Management System

Cloud VMS

A platform that stores, manages, and provides access to video feeds and recordings via cloud infrastructure. VDS AI VisionStream is a cloud VMS with integrated AI analytics and SOC monitoring.

Critical Infrastructure Protection

CIP

Regulatory frameworks and physical measures that safeguard essential facilities such as power plants, substations, and water treatment plants. See also NERC CIP-014.

F

False Positive

An alert triggered by a non-threatening event such as an animal, shadow, or moving vegetation. VDS cloud AI filters 98% of false positives before they reach the SOC.

G

Geofence

A virtual perimeter defined around a physical location. VDS uses geofencing to trigger alerts when activity occurs in restricted zones during armed schedules.

L

License Plate Recognition

LPR

Camera and software system that captures and reads vehicle license plates for identification, access control, or forensic investigation. Also referred to as ALPR (Automatic License Plate Recognition).

Long-Wave Infrared

LWIR

Thermal imaging technology that detects heat signatures in the 8–14 micrometer wavelength range. LWIR cameras provide detection capability in complete darkness and adverse weather conditions.

M

Mobile Surveillance Unit

MSU

A self-contained, trailer-mounted surveillance platform with cameras, cellular connectivity, solar power, and cloud AI analytics. The VDS MSU is the company's flagship product.

N

National Defense Authorization Act Section 889

NDAA 889

Federal law prohibiting government agencies from purchasing telecommunications and video surveillance equipment from specified manufacturers. All VDS hardware is fully NDAA 889 compliant with zero banned components.

NERC CIP-014

North American Electric Reliability Corporation standard requiring physical security plans for critical transmission substations. VDS mobile surveillance helps utilities meet CIP-014 requirements.

Network Video Recorder

NVR

A device or software that records IP camera video feeds to local or network storage. VDS cloud storage supplements or replaces on-premise NVRs.

O

ONVIF

Open Network Video Interface Forum — an industry standard for IP-based physical security products. VDS AI VisionStream supports ONVIF-compliant cameras for third-party integration.

Organized Retail Crime

ORC

Coordinated theft of retail merchandise for resale. VDS AI analytics detect loitering, vehicle staging, and after-hours intrusion patterns associated with ORC.

P

Pan-Tilt-Zoom

PTZ

A camera capable of remote directional and zoom control. VDS MSUs include PTZ cameras that SOC operators can steer in real time to track subjects.

Perimeter Intrusion Detection System

PIDS

A system that detects unauthorized access across a defined perimeter using sensors, cameras, or analytics. VDS provides AI-powered PIDS with cloud processing and SOC verification.

Power over Ethernet

PoE

Technology that delivers electrical power and data through a single Ethernet cable. Fixed cameras often require PoE infrastructure; VDS MSUs are self-powered and do not require PoE runs.

R

Real-Time Streaming Protocol

RTSP

A network protocol for streaming media. VDS AI VisionStream supports RTSP for integrating third-party cameras into the platform.

S

Security Operations Center

SOC

A centralized facility staffed by trained operators who monitor video feeds, verify alerts, and coordinate responses. The VDS SOC operates 24/7 with trained, security-cleared operators.

Security Information and Event Management

SIEM

Enterprise software that aggregates security data from multiple sources for analysis and incident response. VDS API supports SIEM integration via webhooks and REST endpoints.

T

Talk-Down

A live audio intervention by a SOC operator through on-site speakers to deter trespassers or criminal activity. VDS includes two-way audio on all MSU deployments.

Thermal Camera

A camera that captures infrared radiation to create images based on heat signatures rather than visible light. Useful for detection in darkness and low-visibility conditions. See also LWIR.

V

Video Analytics

VA

Software that automatically analyzes video feeds to detect events such as intrusion, loitering, vehicle presence, or fire. VDS processes analytics in the cloud with OTA model updates.

Video Management System

VMS

Software for managing and viewing video from multiple cameras. VDS AI VisionStream serves as a cloud VMS with built-in analytics, mobile access, and SOC integration.
